World Down Syndrome Day

Lots 0f Socks Day

WHAT IS WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY? WHY LOTS OF SOCKS? &

OUR PERSONAL TRADITION

SIGNIFICANCE OF WDSD DATE:

Even the date of World Down Syndrome Day, March 21st, holds a very special, symbolic meaning. To appreciate this meaning you have to have a basic understanding of what Down syndrome, (also called Trisomy 21- TRIsomy meaning three) is. Everyone is born with two sets of chromosomes. Down syndrome occurs when there is an "extra" (third) copy of the 21st chromosome… resulting in Trisomy 21. World Down Syndrome Day is the third month of the year representing the three chromosomes, and is on the 21st day of the month to represent chromosome 21

WHAT IS WDSD?

"World Down Syndrome Day is a day dedicated to help raise awareness for our loved ones with Down Syndrome. It encourages people all over the world to choose your own activities and events to help raise awareness of what Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities." - Down Syndrome International

WHY LOTS OF SOCKS AND HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?

Wear LOTS OF SOCKS on 21 March to raise awareness for our loved ones on World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD). Wear bright, colorful, mismatched, eye-catching, and even My Little Sunshine Face socks to lead to a conversation and the opportunity to raise awareness for our loved ones concerning Down syndrome. The topic of awareness can be centered around anything that is dear to your heart about your loved one that you want the world to know:

Topics that will celebrate your loved one while educating the world.

Topics that promote awareness and encourage acceptance & inclusion.

MY PERSONAL TRADITION ON WDSD/LOTS OF SOCKS DAY:

To raise awareness Ashton and I wear bright, colorful, designer, and eye catching socks to prompt others to ask.. why the socks?! Then I can celebrate and educate for my loved ones by explaining.. "Today is WDSD/LOTS OF SOCKS day, and my little sunshine face was born with Down syndrome. Did you know............ "(and I fill in with whatever is on my heart at the time). I choose to wear socks that illustrate all that I love about Ashton, and that I want others to know about him and all his friends that were born with Down syndrome. I wear colorful and bright socks to represent his personality and what he brings to my life and the world each and every day. I wear eye catching, designer socks  to represent that he catches ones heart through the sight of his eye catching smile, and he is "wonderfully made" designed by God! ( Psalms 139:13-14)  I wear a third sock to represent the third 21st chromosome.. that sock is always the special designer sock to totally show the beauty that he was born with a little something "extra" from you and I, and that he is a beautiful miracle and blessing meant to stand out among the rest and share his sunshine!

HAPPY WORLD DOWN SYNDROME & LOTS OF SOCKS DAY !

This year I am so excited to hand out our books in the My Little Sunshine Face series as people ask.. "why the socks?!" on WDSD! I can not wait to share with the world how my little Ashton is the main character and how God used him, his love, his special personality, smile,  and an extra chromosome to inspire the series and answer His calling for my life. I know it was inspired for such days and opportunities that arise such as WDSD to share the message that we are all "wonderfully made!" (Psalm 139:13-14) My hope is the books will circulate and will open doors to further awareness that reaches the world even beyond WDSD and Lots of Socks Day every year! Have a Happy World Down Syndrome Day this year! Go out and ROCK YOUR SOCKS off for someone you love!!
